Neuro Linguistic Programming: How to Select a Coach to Work With

July 20th, 2009 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Linguistics

/b> almost anybody you know has personal issues and situations they don't know how to deal with.

No matter what is your lifestyle or who are the people you deal with, you will rarely find somebody who is totally happy and satisfied with absolutely every aspect of their life. And when I say rarely, I mean it. Of course many people will say that, but will you buy it? Life is constantly challenging us. There is nothing wrong with it. However, there are some people who can find new choices quite easily and go from challenge to challenge in a breeze and there are some others who remain stuck into the same problems for years. The former is how we would like it to be, while the latter is the basis of what we call psychological problems.

If you stop for a second to think about what the previous paragraph says, you can immediately realize the basis of neuro linguistic programming: if some people remain stuck into the same problems for years, then there must be a structure somewhere in their behavior or within their environment that preserves those problems. There must be something that remains the same every day in order for that problem to remain the same. This is the basis of Neuro Linguistic Programming: we look for recurring patterns in day by day behavior of people.

The same applies for both people who have constant problems and people who have constant success: in both cases there must be something they do repeatedly in order to keep their situation as it is. In Neuro Linguistic Programming we study patterns of behavior, and in particular we study in great detail empowering patterns in order to be able to teach them to people and we study disempowering patterns only to the point where we know enough to help them getting better.

Basically, it is an educational process: we simply help people finding inside themselves the way to live their lives to the fullest. This makes it so that we don't necessarily do the same things when helping different people who say they have the same problem: an NLP session is tailored to the people involved in it. Every single person is unique, and we have to deal with that uniqueness when helping them finding their own way to a good life. Dealing with uniqueness and variety is both exciting and challenging.

Being free for us does not mean not having problems. It means learning how to deal with them.

So, in which areas of your life would you like some help? Most people are extremely good at doing something and they completely lack the skills they would need to do other things: for example, some are extremely good at making money but nobody likes them and they feel alone, while others have lots of friends but no money. Which are your areas for self improvement?

The most common areas where NLP can help you a lot are limiting fears, phobias, addictions to alcohol, fat food, smoking, being shy, being non social and the like. Do you really want to keep living like that for all of your life? Some people do indeed, they say things like “I can't change, I am too young”, “I am too old” and the like. They make lots of excuses in order to keep their problems. Is it worth it? I don't think so. Life is too short for keeping your problems.

Now that you have decided to get better, where do you start? If you live in a big city like me (I live in London, UK), then you will find a lot of people claiming this and that about their ability to help you learning lots of things. How do you choose a practitioner to work with? How do you distinguish the good ones from the others?

There is no absolute guarantee, but here are some guidelines.

First of all, they must have a proper certification. The Society of NLP(tm) is the society that issues the most prestigious certifications. Some of the certifications are signed by Richard Bandler himself, one of the two co-developers of Neuro Linguistic Programming.

But even being certified by The Society of NLP(tm) is not equivalent to being experienced enough or honest enough. One of the cues to look for when choosing a practitioner is wether they are willing to be paid for results: if you get the result you want they get paid, otherwise they don't.

Traditionally, therapists and consultants are paid for the time they spend with you, so that it might happen that you stay with them for a long time and end up not getting what you want, but they will still get their money. Looking for people who are willing to take responsibility for helping you to the point that they get paid only when you get results means that they will always do their best.

Another important cue is wether they are willing to do sessions in public places. This could seem odd to people accustomed to psychotherapy for example, but nonetheless it is an important point: the challenges we face every day happen in the real world. Having a session in a place that somehow resembles the environment where the problem occurs is very important for testing behavioral changes.

So when choosing an Neuro Linguistic Programming practitioner to work with, always ask them if they are willing to be paid for results instead of time. If they say yes, they may ask you a higher fee than others, but you'll know that you've found the right person and that your life will improve.

Speak Up for Success

July 16th, 2009 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Writing

Whether you run a small business or are a CEO in a major corporation, if you don’t speak up, you will not reach your full potential. Susan RoAne, in her landmark book, How to Work the Room tells us that 93 percent of people report that they are shy. This number astounded me and tends to astound the groups I speak to. What it means is that only 7 percent of us believe ourselves not to be shy!

When I walk into a room full of people and see all those friendly faces, conversing freely with each other, I have to believe that more than 7 percent of them are confident, outgoing people. On the other hand, the 93 percent statistic comes from what people say about themselves. That means most of us consider ourselves shy, regardless of how we act in social and professional settings.

How can we learn to Speak up for Success? Many people decide they cannot do it. They decide to live in a quiet world in which they spend time with close friends and family. They decide not to Speak up for Success and remain on the back row.

But, others of us want more. Others of us are reading Oprah’s books on how to become successful’how to set challenging goals for ourselves. Millions of people are spending time and money on coaching to become more than just average. Those are the people who want to learn how to Speak Up for Success in as painless a way as possible.

As a person who most people would call outgoing, as a person who has spent most of her life in front of groups, and as a person, who, yes, would say, if asked, she’s shy, I have learned some ways to make Speaking Up for Success easier.

How to Speak Up for Success

*Start small. Look for places where you can speak up safely. You want to build your confidence. That means not volunteering to speak to the local Chamber of Commerce. It means speaking up at dinner when your son challenges you. It means telling your wife that you need some time to yourself. It means asking your boss for some time off.

*Join a coaching group. Coaching groups will give you both the support and the skills you need to Speak up for Success. Coaching in a group costs a fraction of one-on-one coaching. It is the first step you can take to build your confidence and to reach that goal. In a coaching group you can determine what speaking up means to you, you can set your own personal goals, you can learn tips from the coach, and you can get support from the group. Take a look at the virtual coaching group offered on my site.

*Deal with your “inner critic.” The inner critic is that little voice inside your head that tells you things like, “You’ve got nothing important to say,” or “No one wants to listen to you,” or “Whatever you say will sound stupid,” or “Everyone else is better educated than I am.” This voice will put the brakes on anything you might want to say. Recognize that we all have an inner critic. We all hear the same voice you hear. Some of us have learned to turn that voice off. You can do it, too! *Research and study the blogs that deal with public speaking. You can find a lot of information on my blog. There you will see posts with tips about speaking out, not just public speaking. You will also see a list of other blogs (blogroll) that you can explore.

*After you have practiced speaking up in safe situations, graduate to more challenging places. Speak up at the next meeting of department heads. Speak up the next time your book club meets. Speak up in your Sunday School class. Make small goals but goals that move you forward from the kitchen table to the Sunday School class to the board room to the Rotary Club.

* If you’re thinking I’m too old, or I’m too young, or I’m too shy, or I’m too whatever, I suggest you take a look at Aimee Mullin’s video at www.kennethcole.com/thinkers/bio1.asp. That short video will blow you away. Her advice: “I don’t think any of us reach our full potential when we become comfortable. I look for ways to get comfortable with being uncomfortable. . . We have an opportunity to start over everyday.”

You’ve taken the first step toward Speaking Up for Success. You’ve read this entire article. The challenge now lies with taking that second step. It’s not so hard, you just have to do it!

Linguistics – Why it is Worth Looking Into

July 12th, 2009 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Languages

What Is Linguistics?

Linguistics is, according to Merriam-Webster, “the study of human speech including the units, nature, structure, and modification of language.” It is important to note that linguistics deals with the analysis of any language, not just English.

A lot of ground is covered in linguistics. Some topics include: the evolution of language, how do languages differ from each other, the structure of human languages, dialects, speech acts, pronunciation, historical linguistics, and even informal topics like “made-up” languages, puns, and how the internet has influenced our language.

Why study Linguistics?

One of the questions you may ask is why study linguistics?

Linguistics deals with how to analyze any human language, thus making it an interesting subject. One doesn’t necessarily need to speak any particular language to understand linguistics. It is not as narrow as one might think; there are plenty of applications of linguistics that are useful in everyday life. Like mentioned earlier, it does not necessarily have to be a technical topic at all. Linguistics can be explained using terms that most people can understand, and technical terms can be used sparingly.

Words and phrases used in everyday life can have interesting origins, and the many branches of linguistics can help you understand why we say things in a particular fashion and other times why we do not. Language structure and language use play greater roles in our lives than one may think.

One topic of interest in linguistics is phonetics and phonology- the study of sound systems of language. This may seem narrow, but it does have its uses: like why we say “ah” when opening your mouth at the dentist, and why we say “cheese” when posing for a picture. There are much broader topics like language universals- things that are common to all languages.

It many not seem obvious at first glance, but all languages, even those that differ by orthography (writing), have something in common with each other. The goal of linguistics is not to improve fluency in a particular language, but rather to learn how to analyze any natural language. Linguistics is definitely a topic that is worthy of being studied.
